DUST HACK runs August 8-15, 2025. It’s a week of focused hacking where you’ll work directly with the teams behind DUST, MUD and Redstone to push the boundaries of Autonomous Worlds.

About DUST

DUST is one of the most ambitious experiments in Autonomous World design. It’s a single-shard hardcore survival sandbox world in which everything is programmable. Players can program in-game entities to build anything from simple shop chests to whole city governance systems.

Why participate

Work directly with the architects of the most advanced Autonomous World infrastructure in production. The core developers of MUD, DUST, and Redstone will mentor you through building fully onchain systems that enable new forms of emergent gameplay.

This is your opportunity to understand how we solved the challenges of building a persistent, programmable sandbox world and to explore gameplay mechanics that simply aren’t possible in traditional games.

The Lattice team had a blast meeting you all at Devcon and MUD Day last week in Bangkok! Now that (most of us) are back home, we’re taking this week’s newsletter to go over everything that happened during Devcon! Strap yourselves in.

MUD Standard World Interface

Last week, we announced moving toward the MUD Standard World Interface (SWI), which aims to establish and standardize the interface between a MUD World and peripheral services. Read our full announcement here.

While it will take time to reach this milestone, we’re already working on making progress in this direction. As a first step in this direction, we have submitted a draft ERC for MUD Store, which underpins how MUD handles onchain data storage and retrieval. The ERC covers how Store’s onchain schema, data encoding, interfaces, operations, and events should be implemented. You can read the ERC here, and leave comments!

Quarry

You can run Doom onchain. Last week we also announced Quarry, a new modern computing environment for Autonomous Worlds. You can read our thread here and our full announcement here.

Quarry gives you four key provisions:

• Latency: 7 ms transactions. No lag. No optimistic updates

• Onboarding: Sponsored transactions with ERC 4337

• Scalability: Horizontal scaling + interoperability

• Affordability: Alt-DA, from Redstone and other chains

• Bankless included a write-up on EVE Frontier in a recent thread about onchain games! EVE Frontier is starting their next playtest on November 7th — so be sure to sign up!

• Activity on Redstone has been booming, thanks in part to all of the recent action taking place in Biomes. We highly suggest checking out Biomes now, and following them on X for all of the latest activity happening in the nascent AW!

Crazy that we have less than three weeks until Devcon! At Lattice we’ve been putting final touches on a lot of exciting announcements that we can’t wait to finally share with you on November. • Biomes launched a NEW version of their world last Friday, with an instant realtime UX. We’ve come a long, long way since the days of OPCraft, and Biomes is truly pushing the frontier forward. • 0xPayable had a question about deleting all records in a MUD table. After some back-and-forth with frolic they arrived at a solution involving reusing a MUD table name with a different ID, resulting in 0xPayable saying “Nice. I love mud LOL” 🥰

• dsi had a question about making multiple systems in a single namespace, which frolic also resolved by giving some advice on MUD repo organization.

• DF Archon ported Dark Forest to MUD! This is an incredible full-circle moment. We started building MUD in part because games like Dark Forest were ridiculously hard to build, and now we’re seeing Dark Forest come alive in MUD! Be sure to follow DF Archon for updates on the public playtest starting soon!

• Dappmon announced a list of new features coming soon! We’re excited to check them out.

• We’ve just released an in-browser World Explorer for you to play around with! Right now it’s connected to Redstone and Garnet, our Redstone testnet. It is a browser-based version of our recent World Explorer. While the browser experience defaults to exploring Eve Frontier (which is live today on Redstone Garnet!), you can paste any World address into the URL and start exploring. We'll iterate on this over the next weeks, add features and polish. Send feedback!

• We also rounded up all the work we’ve done with Blockscout on our Redstone block explorer, and custom MUD Worlds View. Check out the thread here!

• We released MUD v2.2.9 earlier this week and the latest MUD version is MUD v2.2.10, released yesterday. Check out the changelog and upgrade to the latest version!

We had a fun week of MUD releases and more! We went from MUD v2.2.4 to MUD v2.2.5 to MUD v2.2.6 to MUD v2.2.7 in the span of a couple of days (the devs are hard at work). Be sure to check out our changelog and update to the latest version of MUD.

We’ve been working on improving global edge node infrastructure and indexing for Redstone, and will have more announcements to share soon!

In the meantime, a friendly reminder that in addition to native support for MUD indexing on Redstone mainnet, we also have the same support on Garnet! If you’re currently playtesting an app on Redstone and haven’t taken advantage of this functionality, you can learn more about how to do so here. h/t BriefKandle (whose game MOCS is currently playtesting!) for making us aware that other MUD builders might not know about MUD indexer support on Garnet!

Weekly Updates

MUD v2.1 is here, which brings multi-namespace support to MUD! This is a big deal for devs and modders, as it's now easy to extend worlds, compose & interact with data living anywhere in the world, and clients are automatically kept up-to-date with latest world state. Learn more from us in this thread, and be sure to check out the relevant MUD config documentation as well!

This week, alvarius also shared some thoughts on speeding up Zustand, the state management library for MUD. Check out the post here!

Finally, alvarius also shared a very important debate on what we should name our new client-side state library. What do you think?

In the interest of democracy, I’ve set up a poll to settle this extremely high-priority issue (in the interest of transparency: results of the poll may be overruled by the MUD core devs). Let’s hear your thoughts!

This week, we had some interesting discussions in our MUD-help channel.

• With the help of t11s, we uncovered and resolved an incompatibility between MUD and reth, in which devs couldn’t set their gas fees to 0 in a testing environment. Thank you to mattsse from the reth team, as the issue is now being resolved (see here and here).

• We had a great discussion with FilosofiaCodigo (Turupawn on Discord) on getting event-like functionality in MUD…which was followed up by a blogpost in both Spanish and English on verifying private off-chain computing using MUD and Circom!

The MUD devs are hard at work adding features like multi-namespace support, a new state sync library, and a World Explorer to the core functionality of MUD. Here are some updates from our devs, diving more into these features.

From frolic, we learned about MUD’s upcoming plans for multi-namespace support, and the engineering groundwork being laid for it. Check out the whole thread here (or click the image below)!

frolic also followed up with a demonstration of our refactor of table shorthands in MUD, to comply with the upcoming rollout of multi-namespace support. See the Github PR here and his thread here!

Meanwhile, alvarius has been hard at work with kooshaba on a new, fast, scalable indexer for MUD to improve state sync times, and they’ve been testing it out on Sky Strife, our in-house RTS game! See the tweet, original thread, and relevant Github link here, or below!

And finally, from Karolis, we had our first taste of the upcoming MUD World Explorer, a dev-facing tool for improving the introspectability of MUD Worlds. Check out the demo here!

We got some great questions from 0xhank, a developer from Primodium, an onchain game using MUD. Because the questions took place over a private channel, we wanted to give everyone the chance to read our responses. Questions are quoted, while answers from alvarius are below. Feel free to send us more questions, especially in the #mud-discussion channel on Discord!

Do you still envision MUD being primarily designed for AWs? (emphasis on 3rd party builders, extension tooling), onchain games? (emphasis on game engine integrations and NFT/token tools) or general web3 dev?

Yes strong focus on AWs. Roadmap over the next couple months includes focus on tooling for extending worlds, multi-namespace support, better onboarding. Focussing on browser based games with the client libraries, because that's the medium that allows for lowest barrier to entry for extending worlds

How much attention will mud receive in the coming months from the lattice team vs redstone, the game studio, and other endeavors?

MUD is at the core of everything Lattice is doing, will receive lots of attention

We're focussed on building great developer tools, not specifically trying to convince people to switch from other tools but just to solve problems we and others run into that are not solved yet by other tools

Do you plan for MUD to remain an open source standard? I've also heard rumors that some new mud features might be designed for use on redstone. curious how youre approaching these dynamics

Yeah 100% focus on open source. There might be some things that are uniquely enabled by Redstone (ie lower latency for state updates) of course but whatever other chains support too will not be artificially locked down to Redstone.

Project Radar

We’re seeing a flurry of new projects being built with MUD! Recent playtests include:

• MOCS - A project from BriefKandle, which is holding playtests on Redstone Garnet right now! Check it out here. From the team: You spawn into a base where you start to mine resources, build modules, assemble ships, travel them around on map to attack others and to build outposts so that your allies can warp ships to the location to fortify your position.

  

• Project Mirage - The game, built with MUD, is currently playtesting on Redstone Garnet! Play it here. From the team: Onchain island-building game. Build and trade your island.

  

• For The Kingdom - Another new MUD game on testnet, which you can play here! From the team: Embark on an epic journey where you'll hunt creatures and fight raid bosses for valuable resources. Uncover ancient ruins and hidden dungeons, each holding their own dangers and rewards.

It’s been quite a while since we last sent out a newsletter — and with good reason. If you missed it, we had a NUMBER of major announcements and initiatives over the past few months. First and foremost, we launched Redstone a home for MUD apps and onchain games. Redstone has been live since May 1st, and is home to projects like:

• Biomes, an “onchain Minecraft-like sandbox” by a team of digital physics aficionados and OPCraft fans

• DEAR, a new game from ARPA Network, featuring whimsical pixel-based artwork and a struggle between good and evil

• DF Archon, community-organized rounds of the beloved onchain game Dark Forest

• Downstream, an infinitely moddable MMO, and the "world's first Post Singularity Civilisation Simulator" built by Playmint

• GG Quest, an onchain gaming guild bringing quests, leaderboards, and progression to onchain games

• Sky Strife, a fully onchain RTS game built by the Lattice team, featuring fast-paced combat and tactical matches

• This Cursed Machine, a "science-fiction body horror fulfillment center simulator” by Moving Castles, an indie studio based in Berlin

• words3, a madcap onchain iteration of Scrabble, built by Small Brain Games, the much-beloved developer of onchain games like draw.tech, and most recently Yonk

Redstone also launched with support from Redstone Market, an NFT marketplace built by Reservoir, relay.link, a fast-bridge with support for L2-to-L2 bridging, Redswap, a DEX running Uniswap v3 contracts, Safe, Randcast, Rainbow custom network support, and Privy, as well as Metamask and Walletconnect support.

Today, we also posted a roundup thread, highlighting all of the exciting things that have happened during the Redstone Worlds Expo since we launched! You can keep playing your favorite Redstone games, and get ready for the next Redstone Worlds Expo.

Redstone Testnet Notice

In case you missed our announcement, we're deprecating the Lattice Testnet & Redstone Holesky Testnet, in favor of the Garnet Holesky Testnet. You can find instructions on how to bridge funds from the soon-to-be deprecated Redstone Holesky testnet here. Please note that we will be deprecating the old testnet in about a month, so please be sure to bridge before then!

MUD v2 Stable Release!

About two months ago, we announced the stable release of MUD v2! This is following our MUD v2 audit with Open Zeppelin which was completed in February. We can now officially recommend MUD for use in-production (which is fortunate, because the majority of games on Redstone use MUD!).

For two years, Lattice (and our incredible community of contributors) has been building MUD, our engine for ambitious onchain applications. For most of this time, MUD has been an ever-evolving codebase, requiring frequent reminders to update to the latest version of MUD. Additionally, MUD was unaudited, which limited the number of projects that felt confident enough to deploy their projects to mainnet.

Today, we’re excited to announce the official completion of our audit by Open Zeppelin. You can see the complete audit of the MUD Contracts here, and the complete audit of the MUD Code Generation here. Additionally, Open Zeppelin wrote an illustrative blogpost on the importance of self-contained code, inspired by their findings and our fixes of the MUD codebase.

If you haven’t updated to the latest version of MUD, now is a great opportunity to do so! However, MUD is not quite stable yet. Over the next few weeks, we are working on a MUD Query API, to augment our indexer with filtering and streaming. You can track our progress in this Github issue. Additionally, we will be updating the MUD indexer to be more resilient and reliable. We expect these changes to be completed in March, so stay tuned for the fully stable version of MUD then!

We’d like to thank everyone for their support as we prepare for the fully production-ready version of MUD. We couldn’t do it without our users, so thank you for your feedback and for battle-testing MUD!

MUD Events

We have a couple of MUD events coming up this week! First up, we will be hosting another MUD Community Demo this Thursday at 9:30AM ET / 2:30PM GMT on Discord. On the docket is the Tenet team demoing gameplay from Everlon, their physics simulation game which is currently playtesting, and MOCS, a space game built by Boffee and BriefKandle. We may have more additions as well, and feel free to reach out if you want to be included! Sign up for the event here.

Additionally, we’ll be hosting Builder Office Hours for Sky Strife on Thursday at 8pm ET. Following the open-sourcing of the Sky Strife codebase, and the release of the headless client for Sky Strife, we’ll be walking through the process of building your own clients for the game. MUD Changelog and Documentation Updates

We’ve just released our latest changelog (Version 2.0.0-Next.17) and updated our MUD Status page. Here are some of the biggest changes (to see the full versions view the changelog and Status page)

• Changelog: WorldFactory now expects a user-provided salt when calling deployWorld(...) (instead of the previous globally incrementing counter). This enables deterministic world addresses across different chains.

  When using mud deploy, you can provide a bytes32 hex-encoded salt using the --salt option, otherwise it defaults to a random hex value.

• Changelog: chore: upgrade to Solidity 0.8.24 (#2202)

• Changelog: feat(world): rename CoreModule to InitModule

• Changelog: feat(store): rename StoreCore.registerCoreTables to registerInternalTables (#2225)

• Docs: Added a page explaining how MUD models data

• Docs: Added a page explaining the difference between batch calls and a generic multicall in MUD
